The Increased Teenage Smoking And Tobacco Use

Alarming statistics now show that in the US, teenage smoking and tobacco use is an ingrained habit. As many as 25% of 12th grade students and 28% of high school students smoke daily.
Some Smoking And Tobacco Facts.
The number has been put at 6,000 daily those teens under 18 that pick up the habit, a third of who will continue to smoke as adults. 80% of adult smokers profess that they started smoking before age 18.
If the adolescent has smoked more than 100 cigarettes he can be said to be already hooked to the habit and many in this category have expressed a wish to quit cigarettes.
How do teens fall into the trap?
They are a group that likes to act out behavior that is associated with coolness and daring. If not properly educated on the dangers of smoking and tobacco they easily fall into the trap.
Tobacco advertising tends to link smoking with independence, attractiveness and vigor and to the fragile teenage mind this all seems very fitting.
The addiction and its effects.
The active drug found in cigarettes and that causes addiction is nicotine. The user becomes physically and psychologically dependent on it very often in search of self-esteem or recognition. And like many others, this addiction is expensive to maintain.
Aggressiveness is common in adolescent smokers, and it is highly likely that they are more prone to abuse other drugs and substances than their non-smoking peers.
What is called for in teenage smoking and tobacco use, is serious intervention to arrest these trends. A lot is at stake for the teen smoker, most especially his health.
