American society values control over almost everything. We want to control things at work, things at home, our finances, our weight, our careers, and our relationships. In such a culture of control, where does God fit in? Can you really achieve success and happiness by turning your life over to God?

Spiritual Formation is today’s buzzword for what is actually an ancient practice. This kind of spiritual exercise loosens stiff necks and bends proud knees. It works from the inside out, conforming us to the Holy One by growing within us an awareness of His Ways.

Statistics tell us 90% of Americans will make New Year’s resolutions. Sadly, 50% of us will have abandoned our goals by the end of January. Of those still holding on to hope, only 50% will be realized. So, why do we continue this tortuous ritual? Perhaps it is the hope that this year we will make better choices. This year, we tell ourselves, will finally be the year we turn that corner, flip over the new leaf, and begin again.

Every New Year I encounter the same interior battle between the good business practice of setting goals and my Christian understanding of God’s outworking of our purpose and plan. When does goal setting or making New Year’s resolutions cross the Christian line into self-determination?

Many Hindus are taking to Krsna consciousness, and this is great. However, there is a misconception that politicians like Dave Cameron visiting Bhaktivedanta Manor or holding a Diwali festival with 20,000 Hindus attending is good publicity for Krishna consciousness. Such activities support the belief that the Hare Krishnas are part of the Hindu religion. In some countries, it may be beneficial to align with the local Hindus for preaching purposes; this is not so in Britain where there is a large Hindu population and Hinduism is just another minority religion. I appreciate the effort of the present leadership, and their intentions are commendable.
